Actually, the girl in the background was the girl he had the 2 week love fest with. He had mentioned, on his first date with her, that we are all probably in the background of countless family photos of people we don't know. And there she was in the background of a picture of his current girlfriend
The ending is his future girlfriend its kinda of like saying you don't know how much photos you are in ,like you know when you take a picture and you see all these random people you dont know in the background well yeah i think you get it now..
